Charles Dickens and Kool and the Gang

October 14, 2010

I know you’ve all been wondering why my ten year old, Bernie, likes the classic hit Celebrate (or is it called Celebration?) by Kool and the Gang, right? Well, at least I was, when someone put it on during a big carpool haul a few weeks ago and my kids knew all the words.

My 10, 12 and 15 year olds are regular participants in a fun literature group, hosted by some friends of ours, called “Page to Stage”. Each month they a solid work of literature and then get together to watch the movie (as well as enjoy some competitive girls vs. boys book quizzes). They love it and it’s great motivation for getting through some challenging works (perhaps a little above some of their heads at times, but that’s okay).

A few months ago, the book of the month was Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. We generally pick up the audio book (from librivox.com or audible.com) for the heftier tomes. So each of the kids was at a different point in the audio and Bernie was the last to finish up. She was listening to it on and off on a portable mp3 player when Gus borrowed the player on the sly and set it up so the song Celebrate would play immediately after the end of the book.

I love my kids.
